Black Cat Vegan Cafe, London

So here we are, hungry vegan food hunters tracking down a colorful flyer promise of non profit, 100% vegan food that we found hanging on the blackboard of our favorite of all yoga studios: Jivamukti. Arrived in Hackney with roaring stomachs we don’t get disapointed of the menu – no we are in sheer delight of all the variety that is offered here! There is so much that we want to try, so we decide to take three main menus and starters and share them between us. Whilst we eagerly eye the cakes on the counter we know It will take a looong time until we leave this place and we get comfortable with a Hot Chocolate topped with marshmallows.

While we are waiting for our orders we explore the shop and find lots of bargains like a lovely Jutebeutel for 5 Pounds and a pizza cheese for 1.50. Β You can find snacks, chocolate bars, faux meat and cheese, vegan household items and there is also a lot of interesting books about Veganism, Vegan cookery books or also anarchy literature. Everything is really cheap, of course because it is a non profit shop. Yeah!

The Main dishes are all really tasty and we feel that everything is homemade and fresh. We find out that we all three think that the Seitan Sandwich tastes outstanding good and we like the Lentil Pie with Mashed potato and Kale. The Burger is of course amazing as well. Its the first time for us to try a sausage baked in a bread roll and we wonder how this could happen?!

We can’t behave and order our cakes and brownies with whipped cream and large scoops of ice cream and have an amazing munch on the end of an amazing munch! Life is good with places like these! We are grateful to have found such an affordable, graceful, pleasure bringing institution and plan a return as soon as we can. meoooow!

El Romero Las Terrazas

And last but not least my favorite vegetarian restaurant in Cuba…so far! And the only place where I could find Seitan, even if it, as I know now, so easy and cheap to make!
There’s a lot to tell about this Eco-Restaurant!! First of all, if you are lucky like we were, you find a place at one of the 2 tables on the balkony and have a beautiful view! Then, what I appreciated really much, you can choose everything from starter over main dish till dessert in small, medium or large! Like this I could order nearly the whole menu πŸ˜‰ also the drinks can be ordered like this. But there are no normal or unhealthy drinks! Fruit juices with healthy fruits I never heard of! Another big plus point is that they use neither milk nor eggs and only 2 or 3 dishes of the menu are wit cheese, and this partly optional!
You get one starter as a present from the kitchen (Cebiche of Lotus), together with the advice to “take one another by the hands, and, with closed eyes, make an invocation to give thanks to nature for food, love, health, harmony, solidarity and peace,” before you start to eat. I can’t imagine a better start for a lunch!!
All I ordered was absolutely delicious and I spend around 15 Euro for a lot if different tasty dishes!
It’s located in the nature reserve community Las Terrazas, a wonderful place in Cuba, which I would suggest not to miss! Entry to the whole complex is between 1,50 and 3 Euro, depends if you wanna swim there in a river or not.
Anyway, this restaurant is a must seen!!!

Self made Seitan

I made it!!! I made my first self made Seitan!! And it’s quite easy!!
All you need is:
flour and water!!
Nothing more!
Mix first 500 gram of flour with water till you have a nice dough. Put your dough ball in a bowl add water till the ball is completely under the water and let it like this for the next 8 hours!
After this you have to wash your flour-ball-soon-Seitan-thing… And this actually a lot!
Ready with this pack it in a kitchen towel, close it well and cook it in a broth of for example vegetables, ginger, onions…everything of what you think it could make a good taste!
Cook it long, like one hour and let it cool down also in the broth.
Now you only have to cut it and prepare it how you like!
I made directly two versions of little Seitan steaks and I like!!!

Vegan Dinner and Cooking classes at OPs

And again I joined a fabulous evening at restaurant vegetarian OPS, this time with a menu cooked from participants of a cooking class that day.
It was a very nice and completely vegan menu with starters from a buffet, a first and a second plate and a nice dessert of which like often I couldn’t made the picture anymore because I ate it directly without able to think anymore πŸ˜‰
Nearly all visitors of this evening were in accord that Seitan is something much more better than normal meat!
And as the perfect end of the evening I got a copy of the book from the chef himself!
So if you live in Rome and want to improve your cooking abilities I can suggest this one! Or take the book like I did! Can’t wait to try a few recipes soon!
